DETROIT — Last year, sales of all-electric and hybrid vehicles reached 20% of new car and truck sales in the United States for the first time — a landmark year for “green” vehicles, but the pace of growth was slower than many had expected.
Automotive data company Motor Intelligence reports that more than 3.2 million “electric” vehicles were sold worldwide last year, including 1.9 million hybrids (including plug-in models) and 1.3 million all-electric models.
Conventional vehicles with gasoline or diesel internal combustion engines still account for the majority of sales, but fell to 79.8%, the first time in modern history that they have fallen below 80%.
In terms of pure electric vehicle sales, Tesla continues to dominate, but Cox Automotive estimates that its annual sales will decline, with market share falling from 55% in 2023 to about 49%. The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are expected to be the best-selling electric vehicles in 2024.
Following Tesla are Hyundai Motor, which has 9.3% of the EV market, and General Motors, which has 8.7%, followed by Ford Motor, which has 7.5%, according to Motor Intelligence. BMW is fifth with 4.1%.
The U.S. EV market is highly competitive: Of the 68 mainstream EV models tracked by Cox Kelley Blue Book, 24 saw year-over-year sales growth; 17 were new to the market; and 27 saw sales decline.
There is more uncertainty about how sales of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will fare this year because of possible actions by the incoming Trump administration.
Currently, there is a federal government credit subsidy of up to $7,500 for the purchase of EVs and plug-in electric vehicles, but President-elect Donald Trump could eliminate that subsidy, along with other support for EVs.
Cox Automotive expects EV sales to hit another record high in 2025, accounting for about 10% of new vehicle sales. If hybrids are included, the company expects one in every four cars sold this year to be an electric vehicle.
